This is one of the biggies and one of the most deceptive, yet subtle. Why is it deceptive? Because scripture is mentioned (although most out of context) and put God in the equation. It is ‘a form of godliness‘.

You can always discern man centered preaching against Christ centered preaching because one of the main emphasis is about who WE are in Christ and not about who Christ is. A classic example of this can be heard when Paul Edwards interviewed Paula White. The interview can be heard here.

With this type of preaching, we are at the center and it is as if we use God to get what we want because of ‘our identity and position in Christ’. So you will commonly hear the focus on how:

  • YOU can possess the land
  • YOU are the head and not the tail
  • YOU can reach your potential
  • YOU can live the abundant life
  • YOU can get that husband, wife, car house etc
  • YOU can receive health and wealth
  • YOU can receive blessings

Then there are the big giveaway phrases also like ‘YOUR destiny, YOUR purpose’, ‘YOUR season’, ‘YOUR breakthrough’, ‘YOU’RE going to another level’.

Just for fun, as I was writing this, I thought “let me go on some of these teachers websites and see what books they are promoting” and here is what I found.

You’re all that Become a better you Reposition Yourself Unleashing your God given dreams 8 Steps to create the Life you want When will we yield to the anoininting of wealth? Walking in Your own shoes

Do you notice a re-occurring theme? It’s all about YOU.

Phil 2:13 says “For it is GOD who works in YOU both to will and to do for HIS good pleasure.”

Notice it does NOT say “For it is YOU who works in GOD both to will and to do for YOUR good pleasure.

When ever you listen to a sermon or read a book, a good yardstick is to always see who is at the center of the sermon. True preaching will ALWAYS be Christ centered and all about glorifying him primarily.

Remember to pray for these teachers.

For those who like man centered sermons, below is a CD set just for you

And you may even think about attending this church

For more information about man centered preaching, click here

If you are anything you like me, you are probably more consistent with your bible study life then your prayer life (or vice versa). It is so easy to not make dedicated prayer a priority in our daily christian life and what normally happens is that God gets the left overs at the end of the day (if he gets anything at all). My friend once told me that urgency is the enemy of importance and what he meant by that is we often do things which we think is urgent e.g. housework at the expense of what is important i.e. spending time with God in prayer. Martha had the same problem

Luke 10:38-42

38Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. 39She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word.40But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.”41But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things;42but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

Click here to listen to a message by John Piper that has helped me tremondously in changing my prayer life and making it consistent. I strongly recommend listening to it but if you want, you can read the transcript here

As a summary, let your prayer be

F – Free and Formed

A – Alone and Assembled

D – Desperate and Delighted

E – Explosive and Extended

S – Spontaneous and scheduled

And remember, your prayers will be answered in the way you asked…..or in a better way

This quiz is taken from A Little Leaven

It will show you the absurdity of the modern gospel that is proclaimed today

Hopefully it won’t be too hard because each question is multiple choice. To make the quiz a little easier I’ve also provided links for all of the answers so that you can get more information before you make your decision. Are you ready? Here we go.

PetercrucifiedQuestion 1

This is a painting depicting the crucifixion of the the Apostle Peter (click on the image to enlarge it). Church history tells us that he was martyred by the Emperor Nero in Rome. However, Peter didn’t feel worthy enough to experience the same death as our Lord and savior Jesus Christ so he was crucified upside down. It took several days for him to die.

Why was the Apostle Peter martyred?

A. Because he was caught preaching a sermon series on How to Have the Greatest Sex Ever?

B. Because he was teaching people how to love themselves?

C. Because he proclaimed forgiveness of sins and salvation alone through Jesus Christ?

(The correct answer is C. If you thought it was A or B, then you need to read your Bible more)

Beheadin
Question 2

The statue to the right depicts the beheading of the Apostle Paul (click on the image to enlarge it). He was also murdered by the Emperor Nero. Because he was a Roman citizen, Paul’s death was ‘easier’ than Peter’s. Paul was beheaded.

Why was the Apostle Paul martyred?

A. He stubbornly preached ‘Christ Crucified for Sinners‘. A message that is a stumbling block for Jews and foolishness for Greeks.

B. He was caught teaching people “How to Become a Better You” and was overheard sharing the 7 keys for improving your life everyday.

(The Answer is A. If you chose B then you are probably attending a heretical church)

Question 3

Watch the video posted below. It is one of the deleted scenes from the movie Gladiator. It depicts Christians being fed to the lions in the coliseum. After viewing the video answer the question below.

Why were these Christians put to death in the Coliseum?

A. Because they were teaching that God wants people to be rich and prosperous.

B. Because they were teaching the 10 Commandments of Health and Wellness.

C. Because they trusted in Christ for their salvation and the forgiveness of their sins.

(The correct answer is C. If you got this one wrong please send us an email and we will pray for you.)

Question 4 – (This is the toughest one. Be sure to read all the options before you answer.)

Africa_poverty_2This picture depicts a poverty stricken African child infected with the AIDS virus. He will be dead within the year.

Which message do you think he needs to hear the most?

A. Learn How to Have a Dream Family

B. The Gospel According to the Beatles.

C. How to discover his life’s purpose.

D. How to Live Your Best Life Now

E. Overcoming Dysfunctional Relationships

F. How to have an iLife.

G. That Jesus Christ died on the cross to atone for his sins and that he needs to repent and believe the gospel.

(The correct answer is G. If you got this one wrong then we REALLY need to talk. Have your Christian friends contact us and we’ll schedule an intervention for you.)

Have you noticed that none of the popular American sermon themes seem appropriate in these contexts. There is a reason for that. The reason is because too many pastors are not preaching sound doctrine. Instead, they are preaching messages that tickle the ears of the unsaved in order to attract a crowd.

Lets get back to the gospel

I have heard a few christian poets and to be honest, hardly any of them have really moved me. Maybe because, to me, their poems seem to be very man centered and lack any real biblical substance. That was until I came across Blair Wingo. Watch the videos below:

Allow me to re-introduce the Christ

The — — Poet

What if there were no more excuses?

All My Devotion Was Emotion.

You Just Lost one…

I remember when you used to love me

There is just something about Christ Centered poetry that other poetry cannot touch. When its centered around his word and around Him, thats what makes it powerful. Yeah its OK to talk about life etc etc but the power to change lives is in the gospel itself.

There is no doubt that numerology is in the bible. As per www.gotquestions.org

Biblical numerology is the study of numbers in the Bible. Two of the most commonly repeated numbers in the Bible are 7 and 40. The number 7 signifies completion or perfection (Genesis 7:2-4; Revelation 1:20). It is often called “God’s number” since He is the only One who is perfect and complete (Revelation 4:5; 5:1, 5-6). The number 3 is also thought to be the number of divine perfection: The Trinity consists of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The number 40 is often understood as the “number of probation or trial.” For example: the Israelites wandered for 40 years (Deuteronomy 8:2-5); Moses was on the mount for 40 days (Exodus 24:18); 40 days were involved in the story of Jonah and Nineveh (Jonah 3:4); Jesus was tempted for 40 days (Matthew 4:2); there were 40 days between Jesus’ resurrection and ascension (Acts 1:3). Another number repeated in the Bible is 4, which is the number of creation: North, South, East, West; four seasons. The number 6 is thought to be the number of man: Man was created on the 6th day; man labors 6 days only. Another example of the Bible using a number to signify something is the number 666, the number of the Antichrist in Revelation chapter 13.

Whether or not the numbers really do have a significance is still debated in many circles. The Bible definitely seems to use numbers in patterns or to teach a spiritual truth.

BUT what is NOT seen in the bible is what we see in this video.

Where numbers are used in order to manipulate people into giving money. In fact I would be grateful if someone can show me ANYWHERE in the new testament where the apostles used numbers in any way close to what we see here.

In fact, this kind of numerology is more linked to the occult than Christianity where you are basically saying that if you give X amount (where X is the special number), then you this good thing will happen to you and your purpose is somehow wrapped up or linked to that number. What foolishness!!! When you start operating in this, you have definitely crossed the line. Just type numerology in Google and see what occultic stuff it comes up with.

I have heard quite a few preachers who abuse numerology to fleece the flock or to deceive them in one way or another. For example, when it comes to July, they say because it is the 7th month, things are going to be perfected, or whenever 7 appears in anything they use it as a ‘perfection’ prophecy. This is the same with other numbers also. I’m sure because we are in 2007, there were many perfection prophecies going on this year meaning that every believer will have things ‘perfected’…….NOT.

Here is another example of someone cramming their numerology doctrine into scripture to make it say what they want it to say

I will leave you with a quote from the same website I mentioned above

……many people put too much significance on “Biblical numerology,” trying to find a special meaning behind every number in the Bible. Often a number in the Bible is simply a number. God does not call us to search for secret meanings, hidden messages, and codes in the Bible. There is more than enough truth in the words and meanings of Scripture to meet all our needs and make us “complete and thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16).

Remember to pray for these teachers.

I came across this video and it bought me to tears. I could not but be grateful for the punishment and the wrath that Christ took upon himself, being the substitute for the sins that I have commited.

May the Lamb receive the reward for his suffering.

2 Corinthians 5:18-20

18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God

What amazing love !!
