Below is the Westminster Shorter Catechism taken from The Center for Reformed Theolody and Apologetics and these have a lot of basic theological answers which I think you will find helpful if you have not seen it already. Like everything, please check everything out with the bible. I can say that I agree with the vast majority of the answers below. There may be minor things that I disagree with, e.g. Q. 95. as I do not believe in infant baptism, but as I always say, lets major in the major and minor in the minor

Q. 1. What is the chief end of man?
A. Man’s chief end is to glorify God,[1] and to enjoy him forever.[2]

Q. 2. What rule hath God given to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him?
A. The Word of God, which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments,[3] is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him.[4]

Q. 3. What do the Scriptures principally teach?
A. The Scriptures principally teach, what man is to believe concerning God,[5] and what duty God requires of man.[6]

Q. 4. What is God?
A. God is a Spirit,[7] infinite,[8] eternal,[9] and unchangeable,[10] in his being,[11] wisdom,[12] power,[13] holiness,[14] justice,[15] goodness,[16] and truth.[17]

Q. 5. Are there more Gods than one?
A. There is but one only,[18] the living and true God.[19]

Q. 6. How many persons are there in the Godhead?
A. There are three persons in the Godhead: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost;[20] and these three are one God, the same in substance, equal in power and glory.[21]

A. The decrees of God are, his eternal purpose, according to the counsel of his will, whereby, for his own glory, he hath foreordained whatsoever comes to pass.[22]

Q. 8. How doth God execute his decrees?
A. God executeth his decrees in the works of creation and providence.[23]

Q. 9. What is the work of creation?
A. The work of creation is, God’s making all things of nothing, by the word of his power,[24] in the space of six days, and all very good.[25]

Q. 10. How did God create man?
A. God created man male and female, after his own image,[26] in knowledge,[27] righteousness, and holiness,[28] with dominion over the creatures.[29]

Q. 11. What are God’s works of providence?
A. God’s works of providence are, his most holy,[30] wise,[31] and powerful[32] preserving[33] and governing[34] all his creatures, and all their actions.[35]

Q. 12. What special act of providence did God exercise towards man in the estate wherein he was created?

Q. 32. What benefits do they that are effectually called partake of in this life?

Q. 33. What is justification?
A. Justification is an act of God’s free grace,[91] wherein he pardoneth all our sins,[92] and accepteth us as righteous in His sight,[93] only for the righteousness of Christ imputed to us,[94] and received by faith alone.[95]

Q. 34. What is adoption?
A. Adoption is an act of God’s free grace,a whereby we are received into the number, and have a right to all the privileges, of the sons of God.[96]

Q. 35. What is sanctification?
A. Sanctification is the work of God’s free grace,[97] whereby we are renewed in the whole man after the image of God,[98] and are enabled more and more to die unto sin, and live unto righteousness.[99]

Q. 36. What are the benefits which in this life do accompany or flow from justification, adoption, and sanctification?

Q. 37. What benefits do believers receive from Christ at death?
A. The souls of believers are at their death made perfect in holiness,[105] and do immediately pass into glory;[106] and their bodies, being still united in Christ,[107] do rest in their graves, till the resurrection.[108]

Q. 38. What benefits do believers receive from Christ at the resurrection?
A. At the resurrection, believers, being raised up in glory,[109] shall be openly acknowledged and acquitted in the day of judgment,[110] and made perfectly blessed in the full enjoying of God[111] to all eternity.[112]

Q. 86. What is faith in Jesus Christ?
A. Faith in Jesus Christ is a saving grace,[178] whereby we receive and rest upon him alone for salvation, as he is offered to us in the gospel.[179]

Q. 87. What is repentance unto life?
A. Repentance unto life is a saving grace,[180] whereby a sinner, out of a true sense of his sin, and apprehension of the mercy of God in Christ,[181] doth, with grief and hatred of his sin, turn from it unto God,[182] with full purpose of, and endeavor after, new obedience.[183]

Q. 88. What are the outward and ordinary means whereby Christ communicateth to us the benefits of redemption?
A. The outward and ordinary means whereby Christ communicateth to us the benefits of redemption are, his ordinances, especially the Word, sacraments, and prayer; all which are made effectual to the elect for salvation.[184]

Q. 89. How is the Word made effectual to salvation?
A. The Spirit of God maketh the reading, but especially the preaching, of the Word, an effectual means of convincing and converting sinners, and of building them up in holiness and comfort, through faith, unto salvation.[185]

Q. 90. How is the Word to be read and heard, that it may become effectual to salvation?
A. That the Word may become effectual to salvation, we must attend thereunto with diligence, preparation, and prayer;[186] receive it with faith and love, lay it up in our hearts, and practice it in our lives.[187]

Q. 94. What is baptism?
A. Baptism is a sacrament, wherein the washing with water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost,[193] doth signify and seal our ingrafting into Christ, and partaking of the benefits of the covenant of grace, and our engagement to be the Lord’s.[194]

Q. 95. To whom is Baptism to be administered?
A. Baptism is not to be administered to any that are out of the visible church, till they profess their faith in Christ, and obedience to him;[195] but the infants of such as are members of the visible church are to be baptized.[196]

Q. 96. What is the Lord’s Supper?
A. The Lord’s Supper is a sacrament, wherein, by giving and receiving bread and wine, according to Christ’s appointment, his death is showed forth;[197] and the worthy receivers are, not after a corporal and carnal manner, but by faith, made partakers of his body and blood, with all his benefits, to their spiritual nourishment, and growth in grace.[198]

Q. 97. What is required for the worthy receiving of the Lord’s Supper?
A. It is required of them that would worthily partake of the Lord’s Supper, that they examine themselves of their knowledge to discern the Lord’s body, of their faith to feed upon him, of their repentance, love, and new obedience; lest, coming unworthily, they eat and drink judgment to themselves.[199]

Q. 98. What is prayer?
A. Prayer is an offering up of our desires unto God,[200] for things agreeable to his will,[201] in the name of Christ,[202] with confession of our sins,[203] and thankful acknowledgment of his mercies.[204]

Q. 99. What rule hath God given for our direction in prayer?
A. The whole Word of God is of use to direct us in prayer;[205] but the special rule of direction is that form of prayer which Christ taught his disciples, commonly called the Lord’s Prayer.[206]

Q. 106. What do we pray for in the sixth petition?
A. In the sixth petition, which is, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, we pray that God would either keep us from being tempted to sin,[223] or support and deliver us when we are tempted.[224]

Q. 107. What doth the conclusion of the Lord’s Prayer teach us?
A. The conclusion of the Lord’s Prayer, which is, For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen, teacheth us to take our encouragement in prayer from God only,[225] and in our prayers to praise him, ascribing kingdom, power, and glory to him;[226] and, in testimony of our desire, and assurance to be heard, we say, Amen.[227]

This is an issue that happened to me very recently and even though the person didnt sin aginst me personally, they were sinning while ministering up front on a Sunday. In a nutshell, on their facebook page, they were consistently using bad language and this included the F-bomb. A part of me wanted to stay out of it but the other part of me knew what the bible said in these circumstances and also knew what damage they could do to those who looked up to them in church

Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness (Galatians 6:1)

To me this was more about the name of Christ and to be honest I was concerned with their salvation. I did not want to come across as ‘holier than thou’ but at the same time, if they were a false convert or self-deceived, it would be unloving of me not to confront their sin. I had already mentioned it before to them but after a while, it obviously did not sink in. I then told them that I wanted to speak to them in church but we kept missing each other so I emailed him instead to let him know what I was going to speak to them about

ME:I am worried about your spiritual being and your salvation. I have seen some of your statuses and you comment on a video with the f word. It is not a good witness for Christ at all

Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. (Eph 4:29-31)

THEM:alan,thank you for all your worries and everything but i dont really need somebody to keep pointing out what im doing with my life. Im sure theres plenty of people from within our church and the christian belief that use language that they are used to using in every day life.

i’m starting to find that the more a few people keep trying to point things out to me about the language i use and the way i may behave or construct my sentences on the internet is actually putting me of wanting to be around such people.

One of the signs of a person who is regenerated is that they embrace biblical correction and so this worried me. However, when I read this I wished that I did speak to them face to face as I think that I may have come across a bit brash. Anyway because of their response, under the principle of Matthew 18:15-17 I decided to bring in a few others before taking it to the leadership in the church. Unbeknown to me, I found out that I was not the first person who had brought up this persons bad language and it had already gone to one of the Pastors. I have now left it in their hands to deal with

Dealing with another persons sin can be very awkward. None of us are sinless which makes it harder as we will no doubtedly be accused of ‘judging’ but as Paul Washer says, when you have a new relationship with Christ, you should also have a new realtionship with sin also and therefore it is our attitude towards sin which speaks volumes

More and more, I am seeing some of my friends who were bought up in church, do the whole ‘church thing’, sing on choirs, went to church every sunday only for them to later on to ‘backslide’. So I have to ask the question, did a true regeneration occur? I did address this on my previous post but I came across this video which reiterated not only my view, but what I believe is a biblical view

Many claim to have been Christians and now claim to have ceased practicing Christianity for whatever reason. Where this may be their experience, the truth is they were never true Christians. They used to THINK they were Christians and later only proved they never were. The Bible is clear that God chooses His people, sovereignly saves them, and keeps them through death and unto life with Him. These are fundamental truths to the Christian faith and cannot be changed by experience- we must properly interpret our experience based on truth. Some claim they used to be a Christian. Fact is, Christians endure till the end, because real Christians are drawn and kept by God.

How do you know that you are saved?

I think the important word here is ‘true’. Many people profess Christ but that does not make them a true believer. Many people go to church but that does not make that person a true believer no more than living in a garage makes you a car.

We can see classic examples of false profession in the parable of the sower. In Mark 4, Jesus gives four examples of how someone responds to the word of God when it is sown. This includes church goers and professing Christians. The examples of these seeds sown are as follows:

  1. The ones sown by the wayside – The word that was sown in their heart is immediately taken away by Satan
  2. The ones sown on stony ground – These immediately receive the word with gladness but they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they stumble
  3. The ones sown among thorns – These are the ones who hear the word but the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
  4. The ones sown on good ground – These are those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.

Now obviously, only God truly knows the heart of a person but EVERYBODY who ‘backslides’ can be put in the first three categories. We know there will be a lot of professing Christians at judgment because Jesus said that MANY will be surprised when he turns them away (Matthew 7:21-23)

Dr John McArthur answers this question thus:

Certainly true Christians can backslide, if by that you mean they can regress into a period of spiritual dullness or disobedience. Those who do so will bring God’s discipline (Hebrews 12:6-11). That’s because God disciplines those who are true sons (v. 8).

But no, if you are thinking of backsliding as a perpetual state of willful rebellion or ungodly indifference on the part of one who professes faith in Christ. That situation is a sign of false profession (Matthew 7:21-23; 1 John 3:4-10).

  • The word backsliding is used two ways in Scripture. It is found only in Old Testament references to the nation of Israel (Jeremiah 3:22; 31:22; 49:4; Hosea 4:16; 11:7; 14:4, KJV). Sometimes it speaks of backsliding as the action of unregenerate people who turn stubbornly away from God (cf. Jeremiah 8:5). In that sense the Word cannot be used to describe true Christians.
  • Other times true believers are said to backslide (Jeremiah 14:7). All believers go through times when they do not grow or are set back in their growth by sin–they seem to be sliding backwards like a calf on a muddy slope (cf. Hosea 4:16, KJV). In that sense the word could apply to true believers.

Some people confuse this with ‘once saved, always saved so I can do what I want and still go to heaven‘. Paul put it like this

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?  Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? (Rom 6:1-2)

The fact is, if you think like that, then that could be a good indication that you are not truly born again in the first place. If this is the case, it would be a good idea to examine yourself to see if you are truly in the faith. (2 Cor 13:54)
